The Death Rattlers are a group of for-hire bounty hunters comprised of three lizards, Boone, Sawyer, and Dakota. They get their jobs through a phone in their office, but have been receiving strange calls from a garbled voice lately, calls that ask them to kill members of high society. Boone gets a call to assassinate Whittaker, the town prophet who controls the weather and destiny of everyone in town. Privately, Whittaker has been growing increasingly unstable, considering laying down his own life to escape his job. When Boone breaks into his home to kill him, Whittaker pleads for death. Unable to kill Whittaker, Boone takes him and allows him to become a Death Rattler as they attempt to solve who called for his assassination.
The series has a secondary focus specifically on Boone and Whittaker's pasts, showing how they have become the person they are now. Boone was raised in a traveling gang much like the Death Rattlers, but was kicked out when the other members learned he was gay and had feelings for the leader. He lived on his own from a very young age and became bitter and calloused to protect himself, forming the Death Rattlers to find a use for his skills with people who will not leave him.
Whittaker was raised in a privileged position, with his father acting as the town prophet. He was destined to become a prophet since he was a child, inhereting his fathers spellbook after his death. He was overjoyed at the position at first, but quickly began to crumble when the pressure of his job became apparent. He has become increasingly suicidal over the years, staying alive only for his wife and daughter, knowing one of them would be forced to take his power when he dies.
Boone is incredibly brash and violent, keeping his distance from others. Even with the people he cares most about he keeps up his angry persona, though his close friends can understand when he is sincere, even though it is often very hard to tell. He is a slight masochist, enjoying the thrill of a fight more than the feeling of winning, and will often pointlessly start fights so he can be hurt.
Due to his upbringing in a gang, Boone is very talented at hand-to-hand combat, preferring it over fighting with any weapons. When fighting, he priotitizes landing hits instead of dodging them, often taking blows head on for the fun of it. He also carries a rifle, but only uses it in dire situations.
Animal Design
Boone is a Gila Monster, with dark scales interrupted with patches of orange. These patches are found all over his body but are most prominent on his arms, neck, and tail. Compared to other lizards, he is relatively short. He is very muscular, with thick arms and legs from years of brawling. Boone's tail is similar, being very thick and muscular. His clothes are quite simple, often wearing only a button up shirt and pants, though he has a preference for leather. He does not care much about his appearance, wearing only what he needs to do his job.

Whittaker: Boone has a complicated relationship with Whittaker. He cares for him deeply and knows he loves him, but is unable to accept that Whittaker could love him back, partially because he is of high status, and partially because of his rejection in the past. Boone does not understand why Whittaker cant simply kill himself, and is generally unsympathetic towards his situation, despite his feelings for him.
Sawyer: Sawyer was the first member of the Death Rattlers after Boone, and Boone considers him one of his best friends. He has a difficult time showing this, but they can often be seen drinking together and associating even outside of jobs. This time spent together is often very quiet but is felt deeply in both men. Boone is unaware Sawyer will accept him as gay, and slightly holds back on their relationship because of it.
Dakota: Dakota is one of Boone's oldest friends, and arguably the person Boone is closest to. Since he feels no attraction towards her, he is able to let loose slightly, knowing many people will likely mistake his affection for her as romantic attraction. They have similar fighting styles, leading them to work together on most jobs, and know each other's fighting habits and personalities very well.
Florence: Boone considers Dakota to be his daughter, though because of their similar personalities they actually spend very little time together. She gets on his nerves very easily, but she is always welcome in his home.
TESTING TESTING 2
While Whittaker has always been a reserved person, his state has deteriorated in the past few years. He is rarely seen in public, save for when announcing his prophecies and any public appearances he must make with his family. When he has been seen, he is relatively pleasant, hiding his true nature behind a small smile and clean clothes. In private, Whittaker is downright miserable. His role as prophet has forced him to endure nearly constant harassment from the people of his town, tearing down his self esteem and making him passively suicidal, though his connections to his wife and daughter keep him from ending his life.
Whittaker is a smoker, and is rarely seen without a long and narrow tobacco pipe.
As a prophet, Whittaker has innate magicial abilities. While he is able to harness the magic within himself, he does most of his work through potions and natural remedies. Many of his spells relate to the natural world, controlling the weather and food supply for his people.
Animal Design
Being a Tawny Owl, Whittaker is much taller than many of the people around him. He has a large chest and upper arms, though most of his bulk is from feathers, and he is in reality quite skinny. His eyes are dark orange and slanted, making him appear much wiser than he truly is. He dresses well, often wearing many layers of coats and shirts to elevate his appearance. His signature outfit is a deep blue coat and light brown tweed pants, with a short black top hat.

Boone: Whittaker is infatuated with Boone, though does not understand exactly why. He is unaware he is gay, and it takes him a long time to understand what Boone makes him feel. He was very resistant to Boone at first, seeing him as a nuisance that is interrupting his life. Due to their difference in personality, Whittaker is both appalled and compelled by his personality, finding him simultaneously very curious and annoying since he has never met someone who is so directly antagonistic. Whittaker is the more dominant in the relationship, and once he warms up to Boone he is very forward and flirtatious.
Porsche: Whittaker is almost entirely unaware of Porsche's resentment for him, and still dearly loves his wife. Due to his passiveness, he appreciates how demanding and confident she is, allowing him to take a back seat in his own relationship. He doesn't have much energy to keep the relationship healthy, and tends to quietly spend time with Porsche and loves the time he is able to spend with her. He is very conflicted on his feelings when he meets Boone, since he still loves his wife but the feelings Boone creates in him is not anything he is used to.
Estelle: Estelle is the most important person in Whittaker's life, and the main reason he has been keeping himself alive. She has become more distant from him as he becomes absorbed in his work, but he never loses love for her even though they rarely see each other.
TESTING TESTING 2
Sawyer is the most empathetic of the Death Rattlers, and is relatively easy to get along with. He is relatively quiet with new people, talking more with the people he knows but always speaks somewhat quietly. He is very affectionate with the other Death Rattlers, much to Boone's seeming annoyance, and is the emotional core holding the group together.
Sawyer uses his quiet nature to his advantage when fighting, avoiding a fight until the very last minute, staying in the back and waiting for the right time to strike. He often goes on jobs before the other two to get intel on their target or their surroundings. While he isn't the strongest of the group, he makes up for it with tactical skill.

Human Design
Dakota: Sawyer and Dakota have been married for about five years, meeting when Boone recruited them to the Death Rattlers. He adores his wife and works most jobs with her when she isn't working with Boone. They spend most of their time together when they arent on a job, and can be found playing cards in the bar and starting fights together. He appreciates her strong personality and loves her dedication to her work.
Boone: Sawyer considers Boone to be his best friend, though their relationship is a little strained due to Boone's reluctance to share anything with Sawyer. He desperately wants Boone to open up to him and often pushes him to show his true self even though he knows Boone will likely never fully have himself on display. He appreciates the company either way, and enjoys the time he can spend with Boone, even if it isn't ideal.
